Advertising guide
Google vehicle ads for dealerships: the setup checklist.
Google vehicle ads show your cars, with photo, price and mileage, right in Google, and they run from a vehicle feed in Google Merchant Center. Setting them up comes down to five things: an accurate feed, a Merchant Center account in your dealership's name, a campaign built on that feed, a vehicle page that each ad lands on, and the numbers you check every month. They are also called vehicle listing ads.

The short answer
- Google vehicle ads, also called vehicle listing ads, show your cars with photo, price and mileage right in Google, built from a vehicle feed in Google Merchant Center.
- Setup comes down to five things: an accurate feed, a Merchant Center account in your dealership's name, a campaign built on that feed, a vehicle page that matches each ad, and calls, forms and chats counted as conversions.
- The feed is the ad: a car that sold yesterday should not be advertised today, and the price in the ad must match the vehicle page and be one you will honor.
- Judge vehicle ads by feed health, cost per appointment and cost per sale, not by clicks.
- In the US and Canada, Google ads for credit and financing cannot target by age, gender, parental status, marital status or ZIP code. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
- Vehicle ads bring the click and a slow reply loses it, so decide who answers a Google lead at 9 PM on a Saturday.
The basics
What a vehicle ad is, and what it is not.
A search ad is words that appear when someone types what they want. A vehicle ad is your car itself: photo, price and mileage, shown in Google and built from your inventory through Google Merchant Center. It runs as a Performance Max campaign built on that feed, so the feed is not a detail. The feed is the ad.
That makes vehicle ads one of four campaigns a dealership account usually runs, next to search, YouTube video and remarketing. This guide covers the vehicle ads. The Google Ads guide covers the rest, and the campaigns that sell cars.
The setup checklist
Seven things to check, in any account.
Whether you run the ads yourself or an agency does. The first five are the setup. The last two keep the ads within the rules and make them pay. Each one ends with the question to ask.
An accurate feed
Google vehicle ads are only as good as the feed behind them. Price, photos, mileage and availability should change as your lot changes, and a car that sold yesterday should not be advertised today.
Ask: Does the feed update when a car sells or the price changes, and how often?
A Merchant Center account in your dealership's name
The feed lives in a Google Merchant Center account that is linked to your Google Ads account. Make it your dealership's, the same way your ad accounts should be, so that if you ever change agencies the account stays with you.
Ask: Whose name is on the Merchant Center account, and who can log in?
A campaign built on the feed
New and used behave differently, so give each its own campaign and budget. Target the area people can realistically drive from, not the whole state. Give a new campaign a few weeks of data before you judge it.
Ask: How is the budget split between new and used, and what area are we targeting?
A vehicle page that matches the ad
A buyer who clicks an ad for one specific truck should land on that truck, not on your home page. The page should show the same price, photos and details as the ad, and an advertised price has to be one you will honor. It should be easy to call, text or ask a question from a phone.
Ask: Click one of our vehicle ads on a phone. Where do I land, and does the price match?
Calls, forms and chats counted
Google can only optimize toward what you measure. Track calls, form leads and chats as conversions, and import booked visits and sales from your CRM so Google learns which clicks become buyers.
Ask: Which actions count as conversions in the account?
Price and financing wording that follows the rules
In the US, naming a monthly payment or a down payment in an ad brings federal disclosure rules, and states add their own. Several Canadian provinces require all-in prices. In the US and Canada, Google ads for credit and financing cannot target by age, gender, parental status, marital status or ZIP code. Have any price or payment ad checked before it runs.
Ask: Do any of our ads mention financing, and are they set up for it?
Every lead answered fast
Google can bring the click. A slow reply loses it.

What to measure
Judge vehicle ads by visits and sales, not clicks.
Clicks and impressions are easy to buy. These are the numbers that tell you whether vehicle ads are selling cars.

| Measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Feed health | How many of your vehicles are approved and showing in Google vehicle ads. Rejected cars are invisible cars. |
| Cost per appointment | What each booked visit costs. The number that tells you whether the ads and the follow-up work together. |
| Cost per sale | What each sold car costs in ads, once you match sales back to the leads that became them. |
| Lead to appointment rate | How many leads become visits. A low rate usually means slow or missing replies, not bad ads. |
| Calls counted | A buyer who calls is a lead too. Track calls from the ads and from your site, so phone leads count as results. |
| Reply time | How fast each Google lead gets a real answer. The fastest store often gets the visit. |
What goes wrong
Five ways vehicle ads quietly go wrong.
The car sold and the ad did not
A stale feed keeps advertising cars you no longer have, and the buyer who clicks finds nothing.
The page says a different price
A buyer who sees one price in the ad and another on the page can stop trusting both.
The click lands on the home page
The buyer wanted one car and now has to hunt for it.
Only forms are counted
Calls and chats go uncounted, so Google learns from a fraction of your real leads.
Nobody answers at night
Many leads arrive at night and on weekends. A lead that waits until morning can end up at another store.
The budget
Set the budget from the visit.
Decide what a booked visit is worth to your store, fund the campaigns that bring visits at or under that cost, and cut the rest. Our ad budget guide has a calculator that works it out from your own numbers.

Quick answers about Google vehicle ads.
What are Google vehicle ads?
Google vehicle ads, also called vehicle listing ads, show your cars with photo, price and mileage right in Google. They are built from your inventory through Google Merchant Center and run as Performance Max campaigns, so the feed has to be accurate and current.
What does a dealership need to run Google vehicle ads?
An accurate vehicle feed, a Google Merchant Center account in the dealership's name, a campaign built on the feed, a page for each vehicle that matches the ad, and conversion tracking for calls, forms and chats. A fast answer to every lead the ads bring matters just as much.
What is the difference between Google vehicle ads and search ads?
Search campaigns catch buyers who type what they want, such as a make and model near them. Vehicle ads show your actual cars with photo, price and mileage, built from your feed. A dealership account often runs both, with separate budgets for new, used, service and brand.
How do you know Google vehicle ads are working?
Check feed health to see how many of your cars are approved and showing, then judge the ads by cost per appointment and cost per sale, not clicks. Count calls as well as forms, and track how fast each Google lead gets a real answer.
Which ad platforms do you run?
Google and YouTube, Facebook and Instagram (Marketplace included), and TikTok. Vehicle Shopping Ads, which put your cars with photo and price in Google vehicle ads, come with Ads Scale + Vehicle Listings and Showroom Elite, or are available as an add-on.
Can car dealership ads mention financing?
Car dealership ads can mention financing, with limits. On Google, in the US and Canada, ads for credit and financing cannot target by age, gender, parental status, marital status or ZIP code. On Facebook and Instagram, ads that promote credit or financing offers must run under Meta's special ad category for financial products, which limits targeting by age, gender and location. Many dealerships keep financing out of the ad and leave it to the conversation and the finance office.
