Google Ads for car dealerships: what actually sells cars.

Google Ads sells cars when the campaigns are built around the vehicles on your lot, the searches buyers make near you, and a fast reply to every lead.

Quick questions, no call needed.

The short answer

  • Google Ads works for a dealership when three things line up: campaigns built on your real inventory, targeting the searches buyers make near you, and a fast answer to every lead the ads bring.
  • Search campaigns catch buyers who type what they want; Google vehicle ads show your cars with photo, price and mileage right in Google; YouTube puts short video in front of local buyers.
  • Google vehicle ads run from a vehicle feed in Google Merchant Center, so your inventory data has to be accurate and current.
  • Send ad clicks to the vehicle's own page, track calls, forms and chats as conversions, and judge campaigns by cost per appointment and cost per sale, not cost per click.
  • In the US and Canada, Google ads for credit and financing cannot target by age, gender, parental status, marital status or ZIP code.
  • Set the budget from what a booked visit is worth, track calls as well as forms, and import sales from your CRM so Google learns which clicks become buyers.

The campaigns

Four campaigns that sell cars.

A dealership account that works usually runs some mix of these four, sized to the store's market and inventory.

Search campaigns

Catch buyers who type what they want: a make and model, a body style near them, your store's name. Keep new, used, service and brand in separate campaigns.

Google vehicle ads

Show your cars with photo, price and mileage right in Google search, fed from your inventory through Google Merchant Center. They run as Performance Max campaigns built on that feed, so it has to be accurate and current.

YouTube video

Short walkarounds and offers in front of local buyers who are still researching. Video builds familiarity, which can make the search ad click later.

Remarketing

Bring back people who viewed your vehicle pages but did not reach out, with the cars they looked at and a reason to come in now.

Set it up right

What should you check in any account?

Use this on your own account or on any agency's. Each one ends with the question to ask.

  1. An accurate inventory feed

Google vehicle ads and dynamic ads are only as good as the feed behind them: price, photos, mileage and availability should change as your lot changes.

Ask them: Does the feed update when a car sells or the price changes?

  2. Clicks land on the car's own page

A buyer who clicks an ad for a 2021 F-150 should land on that truck, not on your home page.

Ask them: Where does each ad send the click?

  3. Calls, forms and chats count as conversions

Google can only optimize toward what you measure. Track calls, form leads and chats as conversions.

Ask them: Which actions count as conversions in the account?

  4. Location targeting that fits your market

Show ads to people who can realistically come in: your market area, not the whole state or the whole country.

Ask them: What area are we targeting, and why that area?

  5. Negative keywords kept up to date

Cut the searches that never buy: job hunters, parts-only, salvage, anything free, and models or services you do not sell.

Ask them: When was the negative keyword list last updated?

  6. Separate budgets for what matters

New, used, service and your own brand name behave differently. Give each its own campaign and budget so one cannot starve the others.

Ask them: How is the budget split between new, used, service and brand?

  7. Financing ads set up for the rules

In the US and Canada, ads for credit and financing cannot target by age, gender, parental status, marital status or ZIP code under Google's personalized advertising policy. Keep financing wording accurate and simple.

Ask them: Do any of our ads mention financing, and are they set up for it?

  8. Every lead answered fast

Google can bring the click; a slow reply loses it. Every call, form and chat it brings should get an answer within minutes, day or night.

Ask them: Who answers a lead from Google at 9 PM on a Saturday?

What to measure

Judge the ads by visits and sales, not clicks.

Clicks and impressions are easy to buy. These are the numbers that tell you whether Google is selling cars.

The numbers to measure in a car dealership Google Ads account, and why each one matters
MeasureWhy it matters
Cost per appointmentWhat each booked visit costs. The number that tells you whether the ads and the follow-up work together.
Cost per saleWhat each sold car costs in ads, once you match sales back to the leads that became them.
Lead to appointment rateHow many leads become visits. A low rate usually means slow or missing replies, not bad ads.
Impression shareHow often your ads show for the searches you want. Low share on your best models means lost buyers.
Feed healthHow many of your vehicles are approved and showing in Google vehicle ads. Rejected cars are invisible cars.
Reply timeHow fast each Google lead gets a real answer. The fastest store often gets the visit.

Beyond the basics

Six things that separate good accounts.

With the campaigns, the setup and the measures in place, these are where dealership accounts win or leak money.

Set the budget from the visit

Decide what a booked visit is worth to your store, fund the campaigns that bring visits at or under that cost, and cut the rest. Give a new campaign a few weeks of data before you judge it.

Count the calls

A buyer who calls is a lead too. Add call assets to your ads and track calls from the ads and from your site, so phone leads count as results.

Send sales back to Google

Import booked visits and sales from your CRM into Google Ads, so its bidding learns which clicks become buyers.

Competitor names, carefully

Bidding on another dealer's name can reach buyers close to a deal, but those clicks can cost more, and their trademark has no place in your ad text. Test it small.

Manufacturer and co-op rules

Franchise dealers: check your manufacturer's brand and co-op rules before launch. Ads that follow them may qualify for co-op money; ads that break them may not.

Price and payment ads

In the US, naming a monthly payment or a down payment in an ad brings federal disclosure rules, and states add their own; several Canadian provinces require all-in prices. Have any price or payment ad checked before it runs.

Straight talk

The best ad still needs a fast answer.

A Google lead that waits until morning can end up at another store. That is why we run the ads and the follow-up as one system: our ad team brings the buyers in, and the AI assistant answers every message within a minute and books the visit.

Quick answers about Google Ads.

What is the best way to advertise a car dealership?

Put real cars from your lot in front of nearby buyers where they already shop: Google search and Google vehicle ads, Facebook and Instagram with Marketplace, and short video on YouTube and TikTok. Change the creative every month, judge it by cost per appointment and cost per sale, and make sure every lead it brings gets an answer within minutes.

Which ad platforms do you run?

Google and YouTube, Facebook and Instagram (Marketplace included), and TikTok. Vehicle Shopping Ads, which put your cars with photo and price in Google vehicle ads, come with Ads Scale + Vehicle Listings and Showroom Elite, or are available as an add-on.

Can car dealership ads mention financing?

Car dealership ads can mention financing, with limits. On Google, in the US and Canada, ads for credit and financing cannot target by age, gender, parental status, marital status or ZIP code. On Facebook and Instagram, ads that promote credit or financing offers must run under Meta's special ad category for financial products, which limits targeting by age, gender and location. Many dealerships keep financing out of the ad and leave it to the conversation and the finance office.

Do you take a percentage of my ad spend?

On our top ad packages, no. On the others, there is a small management fee: a share of what your ads actually spent that month, billed after the month, never on budget that didn't spend. Your ad budget itself is paid straight to the platforms from your own ad accounts, and your quote shows the exact fee.

What if I already run my own ads?

Take AI follow-up on its own. Your assistant works every lead your ads already bring in.

What is speed to lead?

Speed to lead is how fast a business answers a new lead. For a car dealership the target is within 5 minutes, and under one minute is better still, because buyers often ask several stores at once and the first useful reply often gets the visit.

Who owns the ad accounts and the ad budget?

With Dealer Ad Solutions, your dealership owns its ad accounts and its ad budget. We manage the accounts for you, your budget is paid straight to the platforms from your own accounts, and we never raise it without your written consent. Once the fees are paid, the final ads we make for you are yours too.
