Facebook ads for car dealerships: from click to booked visit.

Facebook, Instagram and Marketplace ads work for car dealerships when three things line up: ads built around the cars actually on your lot, a lead format that fits the buyer, and a reply within minutes once the lead comes in. Many stores pay for the first two and lose the sale on the third.

Quick questions, no call needed.

The short answer

  • Facebook, Instagram and Marketplace ads work for car dealerships when the ads show real cars from your lot, the lead format fits the buyer, and every lead gets a reply within minutes.
  • Inventory ads built from your vehicle feed, ads in Facebook Marketplace where people already browse cars for sale, short walkaround videos, and ads that retarget people who viewed your vehicle pages are the dealership workhorses.
  • Instant lead forms bring more leads with less intent, Messenger ads start a conversation that needs a fast reply, and website traffic brings fewer, warmer visitors.
  • Ads that promote credit or financing offers must run under Meta's special ad category for financial products, which limits targeting by age, gender and location.
  • Judge ads by cost per appointment and cost per sale, not cost per lead.

What to run

Which Facebook ad types sell cars?

Most dealership accounts need only a few of these, chosen for the store's inventory and market.

  • Inventory ads from your feed

Ads built automatically from your vehicle feed: the right car, photo and price shown to people browsing similar vehicles. The workhorse for used inventory.

  • Facebook Marketplace ads

Your ads, inventory ads included, shown in Marketplace, where people are already browsing cars for sale. Marketplace buyers message fast and expect a fast answer.

  • Walkaround videos

Short, vertical, filmed on a phone. A salesperson walking around a real car on your lot feels like the store, not like an ad, in the feed, Reels and Stories alike.

  • Instant lead forms

A form that opens inside Facebook or Instagram, prefilled from the profile. Easy for the buyer, so you get more leads, and more of them are casual.

  • Click-to-Messenger ads

The ad opens a conversation instead of a form. Excellent when someone answers in minutes, wasted when nobody does.

  • Retargeting

Ads shown to people who already looked at a vehicle page on your website. A small audience with the highest intent you can buy.

Where the lead lands

Lead forms, Messenger or your website?

Each format trades volume for intent. None of them pays off if the lead waits.

Creative

Ads that look like your lot, not like an ad.

  • Real cars from your lot

Real photos and walkarounds of vehicles you actually have. Buyers can tell a stock photo from your lot in a second.

  • Vertical video first

People watch on their phones. Film vertical, show the car in the first second, and keep it short.

  • The car first, then the offer

Lead with the vehicle and why it is worth a look. A giant SALE banner looks like every other dealer ad in the feed.

  • New creative every month

The same ad shown to the same people stops working. Plan fresh creative every month, not every quarter.

Rules to know

Three rules before you launch.

  • Financing offers have special rules

Ads that promote credit or financing offers must run under Meta's special ad category for financial products, which limits targeting by age, gender and location. Ads about the car itself do not.

  • Advertised prices must be real

The price in the ad has to be a price you will honor, and advertising rules apply to vehicle pricing. Keep ad prices in sync with your website listings.

  • Texting needs permission

Your lead form should clearly ask permission to contact the buyer by text. Keep a record of it, and honor STOP immediately.

General guidance, not legal advice. Platform policies and advertising rules change; check the current rules and your own obligations before you launch.

What to measure

Judge ads by appointments, not by leads.

Cheap leads that nobody answers are the most expensive leads you can buy.

Cost per leadHow cheaply your ads produce contactsEasy to push down with low-intent forms, so never judge ads on it alone

Quick answers about Facebook ads.

Do Facebook ads work for car dealerships?

Facebook ads work for car dealerships when the ads show real cars from your lot, the lead format fits the buyer, and every lead gets a fast reply. Ads that bring in leads nobody answers in time waste the budget, no matter how good the ad is.

Do Facebook Marketplace ads work for car dealers?

Facebook Marketplace ads can work well for car dealers. Ads, including inventory ads built from your vehicle feed, can show in Facebook Marketplace, where people are already browsing cars for sale. Marketplace buyers often message right away and expect a fast answer, so how fast you reply matters as much as the ad itself.

Should a dealership use Facebook lead forms or Messenger ads?

Facebook lead forms and Messenger ads can both work. Instant lead forms bring more leads, many of them casual, and need a fast text or call. Messenger ads start a conversation and need a reply within minutes. If nobody can answer quickly, neither pays off.

Can car dealership ads mention financing?

Car dealership ads can mention financing, with limits. On Google, in the US and Canada, ads for credit and financing cannot target by age, gender, parental status, marital status or ZIP code. On Facebook and Instagram, ads that promote credit or financing offers must run under Meta's special ad category for financial products, which limits targeting by age, gender and location. Many dealerships keep financing out of the ad and leave it to the conversation and the finance office.

Can a dealership message a Facebook or Instagram lead after 24 hours?

Generally, Facebook and Instagram let a business message freely only within 24 hours of the person's last message, with narrow exceptions. That is why a fast reply matters most on those channels, and why it pays to ask early for a phone number and permission to continue by text. DAS, the Dealer Ad Solutions AI, times its last follow-up there to land inside the 24 hours, asking for a phone number.

Do you take a percentage of my ad spend?

On our top ad packages, no. On the others, there is a small management fee: a share of what your ads actually spent that month, billed after the month, never on budget that didn't spend. Your ad budget itself is paid straight to the platforms from your own ad accounts, and your quote shows the exact fee.

Who owns the ad accounts and the ad budget?

With Dealer Ad Solutions, your dealership owns its ad accounts and its ad budget. We manage the accounts for you, your budget is paid straight to the platforms from your own accounts, and we never raise it without your written consent. Once the fees are paid, the final ads we make for you are yours too.
