Buyer's guide

CRM with AI built in vs add-on AI: what changes for your team.

A dealership CRM with AI built in has the assistant working inside the same record, inbox and calendar your team uses, so each customer has one history and nothing is copied between tools. A CRM with an add-on AI is a separate AI product connected to a CRM, which can work, but every connection is something to check. A plain CRM has no assistant at all, so a person has to act on every lead.

The short answer

  • A dealership CRM with AI built in has the assistant working inside the same record, inbox and calendar your team uses, so each customer has one history and nothing is copied between tools.
  • A CRM with an add-on AI is a separate AI product connected to a CRM. It can work, but what the AI sees and what it writes back depends on the connection, so every connection is something to check.
  • A plain CRM has no assistant, so a person has to act on every lead.
  • Six questions sort the three kinds: where the conversation lives, what the AI knows before it answers, who sets it up around your store, whether your team can step in from a phone, whose data it is, and the full monthly cost.
  • If you like your current CRM, keep it: DAS, the Dealer Ad Solutions AI, can work alongside it, answering and booking from its own account, or you can run your store on the CRM that comes with AI follow-up.

The three kinds

Three kinds of CRM, in plain words.

  • A plain CRM

It stores your leads, tasks and appointments. It does not answer anyone. A new lead usually alerts a person, and the person answers, follows up and books the visit.

  • A CRM plus an add-on AI

A separate AI product connected to your CRM. The AI answers leads. What reaches the CRM, and what the AI can see of it, depends on how the two are connected.

  • A CRM with the assistant built in

One system: the assistant, the inbox, the calendar and the pipeline are the same account. Every store with AI follow-up gets its own CRM account with the assistant working inside it: contacts, a sales pipeline, calendars, tasks, one inbox for text, Facebook, Instagram and website chat, and a phone app for your team.

One honest note before the comparison. Dealer Ad Solutions can also work alongside the CRM you already use, with the assistant answering and booking from its own account. For some stores that is the right way to start, and we say more about it below. Want to see what is inside ours? Read about the dealership CRM.

A day in your store

Six moments, kind by kind.

The middle column says what to ask, because how an add-on behaves depends on the product and how it is connected.

Your team

What changes for your team each day?

With a plain CRM, people do the answering. With an add-on, people still answer what the AI cannot, and someone has to own the connection between the two tools. With the AI built in, the assistant does the repetitive, around-the-clock work: first response, qualifying, follow-up and booking. Your team handles the moments that need a person: the test drive, the trade conversation and closing the deal. See how our AI assistant works.

Your salespeople also notice the small things. They open one record and see every conversation, on every channel. They get a task with the details that matter before the customer walks in. They read, answer and take over from the phone app. Nobody copies a note from one screen to another.

Six questions

Six questions that sort the three kinds.

Use them on any CRM, ours included. Each one ends with the question to ask.

  1. Where does the conversation live?

If the AI replies in one tool and your CRM keeps a different record, your people have two places to look.

Ask: Can my team see every message, the AI's included, in one inbox?

  2. What does the AI know before it answers?

A buyer who asked about a truck last spring should not be a stranger today.

Ask: If a customer from last year messages today, what does the AI know about them?

  3. Who sets it up around your store?

Your stages, your calendars, your hand-offs, sales and service.

Ask: Who sets it up, and how much of the work falls on my team?

  4. Can your team step in at any moment?

A person should be able to pause the AI and take over.

Ask: Can a salesperson do that from their phone?

  5. Whose data is it?

Every lead and conversation belongs to your store. With us, we export it for you whenever you ask, up to 30 days after you leave.

Ask: Can we export every lead and conversation if we ever leave?

  6. What is the full monthly cost?

Ask for the cost with everything you need, the contract length, how long the switch takes and who moves your contacts.

Ask: What do I pay each month with the AI, the texting and the CRM all included?

Franchise dealers have one more: ask whether your manufacturer requires a certified CRM. For the wider list, see the 8 things to check before you choose a CRM.

Happy with your CRM?

When to keep the CRM you have.

Happy with your CRM? Keep it. The assistant can work alongside it: it answers and books from its own account, and we set up how leads, notes and appointments reach your team. If you would rather run everything in one place, we help you move your contacts over.

Either way, settle the first question above: where the conversation lives. When your team can see every message in the place they already work, an add-on is easy to live with. When they cannot, the built-in kind closes that gap.

Switching

Switching without a gap.

When you switch to Dealer Ad Solutions, we build alongside your current provider. On go-live day your lead sources are pointed to us, so no lead goes unanswered in between. Your setup is built and tested around your store first, and nothing goes live until you approve it.

One rule

Whichever kind you pick, one rule holds.

Payments, rates, approvals and trade values belong to a person. A customer who asks whether they are talking to a person should get an honest answer. A customer who says stop should hear nothing more on any channel. Ask any provider to show all three working on a test lead you send yourself.

Quick answers about CRM and AI.

What is the difference between a CRM with AI built in and an add-on AI?

In a CRM with AI built in, the assistant works inside the same record, inbox and calendar your team uses, so each customer has one history. An add-on AI is a separate product connected to a CRM, so what it sees and what it writes back depends on the connection. A plain CRM has no assistant, and a person acts on every lead.

What should a dealership ask before adding AI to its CRM?

Ask where the conversation lives, what the AI knows about a returning customer before it answers, who sets it up around your store, whether your team can pause it and take over from their phones, whether you can export your data, and what the full monthly cost is with everything you need. Then have the provider show it working a test lead you send yourself.

Why does one record per customer matter when AI answers leads?

A customer who writes on Facebook on Monday and texts on Thursday is one person. If the AI and the CRM each keep their own record, your salesperson sees half the story. One record means the assistant remembers across channels and months, and your team sees the whole history the moment they open it.

Can Dealer Ad Solutions be our dealership's CRM?

Every store with AI follow-up gets its own CRM account: contacts, a sales pipeline, calendars, tasks and every conversation in one inbox, with a phone app for your team. You can run your store on it as your main CRM, or keep the CRM you have and let the assistant work alongside it.

Do we have to replace our current CRM?

You can keep your current CRM if your team likes it. The assistant answers and books from its own account, and we set up how leads, notes and appointments reach your team. If you would rather run everything in one place, we help you move your contacts over.

What is the best CRM for a car dealership?

The best CRM for a car dealership works your leads by itself. It keeps one record per customer, puts every channel in one inbox, runs follow-up on its own, and comes with calendars, reminders, a phone app and a setup built around your store. Dealer Ad Solutions includes that CRM with every AI follow-up package, with an AI assistant working inside it. Our buyer's guide covers the 8 things to check.
